This project builds on and supplements existing mechanical damage (MD) assessment and management tools, developed on behalf of Pipeline Research Council International (PRCI), Interstate Natural Gas Association of America (INGAA), Canadian Energy Pipeline Association (CEPA), American Petroleum Institute (API), other research organizations and individual pipeline operators, many of which are included in API Recommended Practice (RP) 1183. Since the assembly of API RP 1183, PRCI has continued its mechanical damage strategic research priority in the development of a greater understanding of the behavior of mechanical damage and the production of data to support engineering assessment.
The objective of this research project is to:
- Provide high level guidance regarding smoothing of ILI caliper data with signal noise in context of application of the PRCI Level 2 Shape Parameter fatigue life assessment. - Establish guidance on dent axial limits for cases where the axial boundaries of the dent are ill-defined. - Compile a benchmark in-line inspection (ILI) caliper dataset from the PRCI NDE-4-18 project data that can be used by operators and ILI service providers to standardize their analysis and reporting processes for the PRCI Level 2 Shape Parameter fatigue life assessment approach. - Compile a subset of NDE-4-18 data with calculation results of pertinent intermediate steps involved in PRCI Level 2 Shape Parameter fatigue life assessment. - Highlight and provide examples of anomalous NDE-4-18 ILI caliper data.
The results of this research work and the proposed guidance will aid operators and ILI service providers in improving the consistency of dent geometry parameter extraction for PRCI Level 2 Shape Parameter dent fatigue integrity assessment. The findings and recommendations can be incorporated into the second edition of API RP 1183. The target audience for this document is ILI data analysts and integrity engineers performing shape parameter dent fatigue life assessments.
